The Texas Hemp Classic, held at the iconic comedy venue Vulcan Gas Company, isn’t just another cannabis event—it’s a celebration of the innovation, resilience, and community that defines Texas hemp. This year’s competition showcases some of the most talented cultivators and producers in the state, giving them a platform to share their craft, tell their stories, and compete for the top honors in the Outdoor Grown and Preroll Cup.
But what truly makes this event special is the contestants themselves. Each grower brings a unique perspective, passion, and dedication to their work, and their stories reveal the heart of an industry on the rise.
A Passion for the Plant
For many contestants, like Taylor Kirk of 4K Pharm, the Classic represents more than just a competition—it’s a chance to honor their craft.
“This is THE event in Texas,” Taylor shared. “I’m all about premium quality and transparency, and this competition’s focus on blind tasting and professional analysis ensures a fair and honest evaluation.”
The judging process is elevated this year thanks to SC Labs, the official lab partner for the Texas Hemp Classic. Known for their work with the prestigious Emerald Cup, SC Labs is conducting comprehensive terpene analysis on all entries, adding a scientific rigor that ensures only the best hemp rises to the top.
Taylor’s passion is rooted in sustainability and innovation, with practices like rainwater collection, composting, and cutting-edge cultivation techniques.
“Texas is a sleeping giant,” he says. “If we can pass sensible laws, this state could have one of the largest hemp markets in the world.”
A Stage for Recognition
For Brentton Smith, team leader of 1Team Cannabis, the Classic is an opportunity to be recognized for years of dedication.
“After over a decade of sacrifices to pursue my passion in secret, it means the world to be publicly recognized in one of the biggest states in the country,” he said.
Brentton’s innovation is evident in his work, from his unique far-red lighting techniques to his hands-free pest control system. His entry this year, a non-infused Cap-Junky preroll, speaks for itself.
“The strain tests over 38% THCA and has a terpene profile that delivers strong relaxation and comfort,” he explained.
The Power of Community
The contestants agree that one of the best parts of the Classic is the sense of community it fosters. Jake Garry of Freshgrown Texas, a past winner and this year’s contender with Chemdawg OG and two infused prerolls, sees the event as a platform for connection.
“It’s about motivating, educating, and not discriminating,” Jake said. “The relationships we build here are invaluable.”
Sean Latham of Doobie Blue Genetics echoes that sentiment. “The Classic is a chance to showcase our work, but it’s also about sharing knowledge and building a stronger industry together,” he said.
Looking Ahead
As the Texas hemp industry continues to grow, events like the Texas Hemp Classic play a vital role in shaping its future. From Taylor’s focus on sustainability to Brentton’s push for transparency and Jake’s dedication to education, these contestants are more than growers—they’re pioneers.
The Classic isn’t just a competition; it’s a movement, a rallying cry for better laws, more innovation, and a thriving hemp community. With SC Labs ensuring scientific precision and fairness in judging, the event sets a high bar for excellence in hemp competitions.
As the judges deliberate and winners are crowned, one thing is clear: Texas hemp has never been stronger.
